"Ariel, wait for me!" Flounder calls out to Ariel, who is busy exploring wrecked ships on the ocean floor rather than singing for her father, King Triton. Here's an original hand-painted production cel of a wistful-looking Ariel, as seen at the 5:57 mark in the film. This Disney feature film based on stories by Hans Christian Anderson was so nice they had to make it twice (as a traditionally animated Academy Award-winning production in 1989, and the soon to be released 2023 live action version); however, it's the animated version we celebrate with this splendid production cel. The Little Mermaid was Disney's first fairy tale adaptation since 1959's Sleeping Beauty, and is the film generally recognized as the beginning of the "Disney Renaissance" of 1989-99. The film spawned two direct-to-video sequels, a television series, two live stage presentations with a full orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl; in short, this is one of the most-loved films in the Disney catalogue! The cel image of Ariel is split into three sections (a scene-matched background print of the ship's mast Ariel is behind is included for presentation purposes); the top portion, including a bit of her red hair behind a rope, measures approximately 4.25" x 2.5", while the overall figure size is 5" tall. The cel is placed in a dark green mat with an opening of 12.5" x 9.5"; the mat size is 18" x 15". A silver Disney seal is in the cel's lower right corner. In Very Good condition with minor handling wear.
